Pre-Event Press Release
The Embassy of Nepal in Brussels is organizing an art exhibition titled ‘Art for SDGs: The Mithila Heritage’ from 5 June to 20 June 2026 at the European External Action Service (EEAS) Headquarters, Brussels. The exhibition will showcase the rich and vibrant tradition of Mithila art, one of the Nepal’s most distinguished art forms.
Rooted in centuries-old tradition, Mithila art is a living cultural heritage of extraordinary significance. Characterised by its intricate geometric patterns, vibrant palette, and symbolic motifs drawn from nature, mythology, and daily life, Mithila art has long served as a medium through which communities, particularly women have expressed their values, aspirations and spiritual beliefs.
The theme ‘Art for SDGs: The Mithila Heritage’ connects Nepal’s cultural legacy with the global imperative of sustainable development. The exhibition will highlight how traditional Mithila art speaks to universal themes such as environmental stewardship, gender equality, social harmony, and human dignity; core principles that underpin the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this exhibition, Nepal reaffirms that culture, heritage, and the arts are powerful vehicles for advancing the global development agenda.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place on 9 June 2026, at 14:00 hrs, at the EEAS headquarters, Brussels. The opening ceremony will be graced by high level dignitaries from European Union, Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Kingdom of Belgium, Embassies based in Belgium and Mithila artists from USA and Nepal. The event will offer guests a celebratory introduction to Mithila art and culture, featuring artists, followed by traditional dance performance, authentic Mithila cuisine, warm Nepali hospitality among others.
The exhibition welcomes all interested individuals including Friends of Nepal, Nepali community members, students, artists and the wider Nepali diaspora across the BENELUX Countries, from 5 June to 20 June 2026.
